A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
